Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- What are variations I can do once I am confident in my classic braid?
- What can I do if my braid keeps slipping out?
- How can I improve my braiding skills if I am struggling?
- What do if my arms become too tired while I am french braiding?
If your arms become too tired while you are french braiding, it may help to stretch each out individually. Holding the braid tightly with one hand, you can stretch the other arm. This may make the braid a little bit loose, so be sure to pull it tight after you stretch.
- What is a variation I can try after I master french braiding?
Once you are a proficient french braider, you can try to french braid small portions of your hair instead of all of it. A popular way to do this is braiding the hair around your face or bangs. To do this, separate a small section of your hair around your face on the side opposite your side part. Put the rest of your hair back in a ponytail so it does not get in your way, and focus only on french braiding the small section. This small section can be pinned back or put into a ponytail, depending on what you want. Braiding just your bangs keeps your hair out of your face, but can be dressed up for formal occasions.
- My fishtail braid never looks quite right. Why?
One problem might be the thickness of the sections you are crossing over. If you are not consistent with the thickness of these sections, your braid will not look neat. Another problem might be that the sections you are using are too thick. If this is the case, your braid will look like a classic braid, not a fishtail braid. Although it takes significantly more time, your fishtail braid will not look correct unless you use very thin sections.
- How do I stop small hairs from escaping my fishtail braid?
If you notice that small hairs stick out from your fishtail braid, this is an easy fix! You can just carefully tuck it back into your braid. If it still escapes, you can tuck it back in, and then add a bobby pin to keep it in place. A few hairs falling out isn't a big deal, though. A lot of people prefer this slightly messy look.
