How to Perform a Fishtail Braid
1. Brush through your hair, ensuring there are no tangles. If there are significant tangles or knots, spritz your hair with detangling spray and gently brush through them.
Caution: Do not push through your tangles. This will result in split ends and damaged, dry hair.

2. Tie your hair at the side of your neck with a clear, plastic hair tie, as shown below. If your hair is side parted, gather your hair at the side opposite your part.
3. Separate this ponytail into two even sections.
4. Take a small strand from the outside of one section.
5. Pull it over the rest of the section and into the inside of the other section. The most outer strand of one section is now the most inner strand of the inner section.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5, using the other section. Be sure to pull it tight afterwards, so the braid does not become loose.
Note: Do not vary the thickness of the strand that you pull out.

7. Continue steps 4-6, making sure to pull the braid tight every time, until your braid becomes too small.
8. Secure the end of your braid with a thin hair band.
9. Cut away the clear hair tie that holds the braid at the top.
10. Pin or twist back loose hairs around your face with a bobby pin.
11. Place a bobby pin at the nape of your neck, as shown, to keep the hairs there from slipping out of your braid. To keep hair in place, lightly spritz the braid with hairspray.
You are finally done! Your fishtail braid should look about like the picture below.
